In fact, many visitors to Japan do not know that Japan’s largest lake, Lake Biwa, is right next to Kyoto.
Only 2 stations from Kyoto Station, 9 minute’s ride! It’s only 200 yen. Take the “Biwako Line” from platform 2 or 3 of Kyoto Station. *If you take the “Kosei Line”, you will end up on the other side of Lake Biwa, so please be careful!
When you exit the north exit of Otsu station, you will not believe it’s two stations from Kyoto station. It has a very quiet and relaxing cityscape.
First, let’s go to the tourist information center inside the station. They also speak English. You can also rent a bicycle here. It takes a few minutes to Lake Biwa by bicycle.
(About 10 minutes on foot)

The station has a grocery store (Friend Mart), a convenience store, Starbucks, Omi beef, and a ramen shop!

Friend Mart also sells a lot of rice balls and sandwiches. It is nice to enjoy them at the lakeside in fine weather.

This ramen isn’t actually ramen, it’s called ‘Champon’.
Topped with vegetables and seasoned well with soy sauce. Please try it once! (I love to eat this with vinegar)

There is also a capsule hotel called Calendar Hotel, so you can stay at a reasonable price, and there is also a cafe restaurant where you can relax.
